The Sunport’s General Aviation (GA) apron pavement needed to be strengthened, so the airport could continue to accommodate GA operations, which expanded from propeller aircraft to Boeing 707s. This project required a balanced approach that resolved funding conflicts and minimized disruption of operations. Molzen Corbin developed a new, real-world fleet mix in a successful appeal to the FAA, obtaining approval for a project that did not conform to “typical” GA pavement design guidelines. FAA agreed to the larger, non-standard GA fleet mix, supporting an innovative re-interpretation of “GA,” allowing the Sunport to continue to accept larger aircraft.
