The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) chose Molzen Corbin to redesign the I-10/NM 227 (Vado) and I-10/NM 228 (Mesquite) interchanges as Phase IV of NMDOT’s $100,000,000 program for improvements to Interstate 10 and the regional corridor. Molzen Corbin designed and managed all four phases of this section of interstate that completely reshaped the driving experience for not only transcontinental traffic, but local commuters as well. The purpose of the interchange project was to better accommodate traffic movement through the two interchanges and correct geometric and physical deficiencies that contributed to safety hazards within each of the interchanges. The use of roundabouts at the I-10/NM 227 (Vado) Interchange was one of the first applications of roundabouts at an interstate interchange.
